When searching for the right person for a position,
hiring authorities examine many resumes.

The following guidelines will help ensure that your resume identifies your skills and experiences, 
displays your drive and determination, and demonstrates a touch of class.

Resume Guidelines      

  1. Proofread to make sure there are NO misspelled words or typographical errors.  Have a friend proofread it as well for errors and to make sure it makes sense.
  2. Crisp, clean copies are a must!
  3. If at all possible, keep to one page.
  4. Omit personal information such as marital status or number of children.
  5. If you have been to college or trade school, do not list high school.
  6. Never lie about your work history, gaps in employment or education as they are often checked to verify information is accurate.
  7. Use “action” words such as created, organized, managed, negotiated, and designed.
  8. Include phrases like: problem-solving ability, detail-oriented, self-directed, team-oriented, enthusiastic, hard-working, solid organizational skills, enjoys meeting and greeting the public, etc.
  9. Rework resume to bring your skills in line with what that specific job/industry is looking for. You may need 2-3 different resumes.
  10. The hiring company also looks for accomplishments, characteristics, communication and organizational skills.
  11. The cover letter must also emphasize “how” you will fill the needs of the company rather than how you want the company to meet your needs.
  12. You may briefly state in the cover letter why there are gaps in employment or anything that may appear as a “red flag” in your resume.
  13. Being too anxious for advancement will tell them you won't stay in the position long enough to make it worth hiring you for that position.
